A Message From DPECF President Laura Tucker

 It has been another eventful month for the Democratic Public Education Caucus Florida. Once again our committees have been busy and productive. At the monthly board meeting we approved the 2024-25 Budget that was developed by the Finance Committee led by Sarah Fortney. In the budget we spent time thinking about ways to raise funds so that we can do all of the things we need to do to meet the mission of the caucus.   

On the expenses side of the budget we included all possible expenses that our caucus might have this fiscal year. Some of the figures are spot on and some are an educated guess based on past experience and current prices. A hopeful budget item is for support for our college bound young democrats who intern with our caucus. 

On the Income side of the budget we included a line called Fundraising- this is a place holder for short-term fundraisers. An example might be a time limited fund drive for a specific budget item, i.e. Candidate Support or Student Support. We might set up a Fund Drive goal of say $500 for candidate support once that amount is reached the drive will end.

Our Campaign and Candidates committee will have their first meeting on April 18th. The plan is to form subcommittees that will address School Board 2026 List and Endorsements, Candidate Training and Resources, Candidate Search and outreach, Candidate funding, speaking, team development. The members who previously expressed interest in this committee have been notified of the meeting. Our Platform and Policy committee led by Dr. Deanna Albert is working hard to craft a policy statement for the caucus that will help to define our beliefs and lead our actions today and in the future.      

Our Website refresh project is moving forward with Committee Chair Dr. Kell Cameron. We will have a presentation at our next General Membership meeting to preview the work done so far. Please make sure you attend this meeting to see the project's progress.      

The Florida Legislative session is in full swing and there are many bills we are working on. Please see the Legislative update section of the newsletter for more information.
